Since January 2007, Saint Barnabas Health Care System has been involved in creating a formal succession plan for nurses within the system. During these last two years, participants have been selected based on their consistent work performance, professional behavior and self motivation as they aspire to become nursing executives. The Nurse Managers/Directors experienced a journey accompanied by the Vice Presidents of Patient Care Services.
They have been mentored in communication, problem solving, educational counseling and long term career goals. The participants are in the process of selecting a project that they will lead with the mentorship of a member from the Patient Care Council that will directly impact patient care and/or the nursing workforce. They will also present their project to the Patient Care Council. The participants are also expected to formally mentor a nursing staff member through The Nursing Legacy Succession Program Tier 2. The Nursing Legacy Succession Program has been featured at the national Health Management Academy in 2009, a forum for Senior Chief Nursing Officers of health care systems throughout the United States.
As the Patient Care Council members have supported The Nursing Legacy Program, interest in becoming a “Legacy Participant” has grown. This next step for the Legacy Program is to extend its principles to our nursing staff and align them with Saint Barnabas Health Care System’s strategic plan, primarily to deliver the best patient care under strong competent nursing leaders collaborating with medical excellence.
As Saint Barnabas Health Care System moves forward with the Legacy Initiative we will modify the program to strengthen each participant’s journey so their foundation for leadership continues to be strengthened. This initiative has the potential to create a strong and positive impact for nursing throughout Saint Barnabas Health Care System and to our profession as a whole. We believe that building confident and competent nursing leaders’ will lead to quality, innovative patient care initiatives while creating a supportive, nurturing work environment for nursing professionals.
We invite our Saint Barnabas Health Care System nursing professionals to complete the Nursing Legacy Succession Program application if interested in participating in the program.
